reading pages 140-228
What happens during these chapters explains what was happening on the western front of Japan. they explain how thousands of American boys got shredded up by Japanese machine guns... "As I slowly headed back north in my jeep, one of the frequently used war slogans came to mind. Our Marines were willingly laying down their lives for their country. This statement was sheer nonsense, for the overwhelming majority of the men felt they would be spared, and that it was the next guy that would be killed or wounded. They had no intentions of laying down their lives for their country or anything else. Each man believed he would be one of the lucky ones to return home. Those that lost or never did have this feeling of invulnerability sooner of later cracked up." page 142. This explains what one of the medics whats thinking while he was going back to report what had happened, this shows an amazing point of view because it explains the truth. The truth of what a soldier thinks, and how they feel, feeling and hoping that its the next guy to them that gets shot not them selves.
Fav Pass
My favorite passage is when Harlon Block is speaking about the Fifth Commandment, " Thou Shalt Not Kill," page 192. To me, going back to how a soldier is thinking, this is just impossible. Because in war its kill or be killed. And and its hard not to kill some one when the other person on the opposing side is thinking the exactly what your thinking.
